The subclasses and the minimum points to be scored for each subclass:

- At the time of application if the age of the applicant is 18-24 (inclusive) then the applicant gets 25 points
- At the time of application if the age of the applicant is 25-32 (inclusive) then the applicant gets 30 points
- At the time of application if the age of the applicant is 33-39 (inclusive) then the applicant gets 25 points
- At the time of application if the age of the applicant is 40-44 (inclusive) then the applicant gets 15 points
Points given for English language skills:
Candidates who have a good score in the English Language Testing System (IELTS) will get more points.
- Applicant with Superior English will have a score of 8 or more in the English Language Testing System (IELTS) in each of the four test components. He is given 20 points.
- Applicant with Proficient English will have a score of 7 or more in the English Language Testing System (IELTS) in each of the four test components. He is given 10 points.
- Applicant with Competent English will have a score of 6 or more in the English Language Testing System (IELTS) in each of the four test components. But this low score will not get the applicant any points.
The points awarded for skilled employment:
It must be noted that points given for Australian and overseas skilled employment is 20. The number of points that one can get will also depend on the years of experience in skilled employment. Australian Employment in nominated skilled occupation:
- Minimum 8 and up to 10 years (of past 10 years) will get 20 points
- Minimum 5 but less than 8 years (of past 10 years) will get 15 points
- Minimum 3 but less than 5 years (of past 10 years) will get 10 points
- Minimum 1 but less than 3 years (of past 10 years) will get 5 points
Nominated skilled occupation:
- Minimum 8 and up to 10 years (of past 10 years) will get 15 points
- Minimum of 5 but less than 8 years (of past 10 years) will get 10 points
- Minimum of 3 but less than five years (of past 10 years) will get 5 points
Points that are given for qualification:
- A Doctorate from an Australian educational institution or other Doctorate from recognised university will get 20 points
- Minimum Bachelor degree, including a Bachelor degree with Honours or Masters, from an Australian educational institution or other degree from a reconised university will get 15 points
- Diploma or trade qualification or other qualification completed in Australia, or qualification or award from a reconised university will get 10 points
Points given for the Australian study requirement:
- One or more degrees, diplomas or trade qualifications awarded by an Australian educational institution and meet the Australian Study Requirement will get the applicant 5 points
- Credentialed community language when the applicant is invited to apply will get 5 points
- Points for Study in a Regional Area of Australia will get you 5 points
- Points for Partner Skill Qualifications will get you 5 points
