Some of the skilled workers immigration programmes follow the Canada express entry points system. The programmes which are covered under the express entry system are:

  • the Federal Skilled Worker Class,
  • the Federal Skilled Trades Class,
  • the Canadian Experience Class, and
  • a part of the Provincial Nominee Programs

Which factors or parameters are considered under this system?

It should be noted that the candidates get points based on different parameters. The candidate has to try and score as many points as possible in order to improve the chances of getting an invitation to apply for the permanent resident visa. Some of the factors on which the express entry points calculator is based are:

  • Language skills
  • Education
  • Experience
  • Age
  • Arranged employment in Canada
  • Adaptability

It must be noted that it the candidate has no control on parameters like age. So, he must try to score more points in other parameters. The candidate with better score will have better ranking. This will increase their chances of getting an invitation to apply for the permanent residence visa. It is mandatory for the candidate to score minimum passing points to be eligible for the PR visa programmes.

Parameters and points summary:


  • The candidate can score maximum of 25 points under this parameter.
  • The candidate with doctorate or PHd degree can score the maximum points
  • If the candidate has a degree from a foreign university then he needs to get his educational skills assessed

Work Experience

  • The candidates work experience can help him score maximum of 15 points
  • It is mandatory that the work experience is in the occupation that the candidate has selected from the skilled occupation list.
  • The candidate needs to have minimum of one year experience in order to score points in this category.
  • One year work experience will get the candidate 9 points while a work experience of 6 years or more will help the candidate get 15 points.

Language skills

  • There are two official languages of Canada and they are English and French.
  • The applicant can score maximum of 28 points in language skills.
  • The candidate can score maximum of 24 points for proficiency in first language. He can score 4 additional points for proficiency in second language.
  • The candidate’s reading; writing, speaking and listening skills are assessed.

Other parameters

  • Arranged employment in Canada can help the candidate get 10 points
  • The adaptability criteria can also help the candidate get 10 points
  • If the candidate has a relative like sibling or parent who is a permanent resident of Canada or a citizen of Canada then too the candidate can get some additional points.


  • The applicant can score maximum of 12 points under the age parameter.
  • The candidate needs to be more than 18 years and less than 47 years in order to score points under this parameter
  • Candidates in the age group of 18 to 35 years can score the maximum number of points that is 12
  • A candidate who does not score any points in the age parameter can still be hopeful of getting in to the Express entry pool. He needs to try and score more points in other parameters.
